This poster’s headline reads nothing fake about ’em and the blurb underneath reads a quote from Katy, ‘I’m not into phonies. In a way, the company was smart in how they decided to advertise their chips. What ties the whole idea of this together is the wording that the company decided to go with that looms over Katy's head that reads, "Nothing fake about 'em." This suggests an allusion to Katy's breasts that are covered by the chips when, in reality, we are talking about the chips themselves. What makes the advertisement an appeal to the male gaze is the fact that Katy is holding the two bags of Popchips, one in each hand, in front of her breasts in a way that makes it look almost as if she were naked and needed to cover up. In the photograph, Katy Perry is standing in front of a blue background to, presumably, match the blue background of the Popchips bags that she is holding. This Popchips advertisement uses an appeal to the male gaze and the well known status of a celebrity in order to attract a clear and sweeping audience to their brand.
